By:pass flow jet engine - has by:pass flow controlled by ram operated U-cross-section shutters in annular passage

The jet engine by-pass air flows through the annulus formed by inner and outer casings. A number of shutters are installed around the annulus these shutters having a U-shaped cross-section and being pivoted at one end on pins. The other ends of the shutters are attached in pairs by abolt to the piston rod of a ram. When the ram pulls the ends of the shutters outwards, the area of cross-section of the by-pass flow is increased from a minimum to a maximum. The motion of the shutters is synchronised by the pinions fitted at the end of each shutter.
