An air jet probe or position transmitter determines position and thickness of a product. It can also position an object for microscopic examination or copying. Such a sensor is not subject to wear. A moving shaft (6) with a proximity nozzle (10) at one end is connected to a moving surface (5) attached to a flexible membrane (4) held between a case (1) and cover (2). The nozzle has a compressed air source (11). The air leaves via the nozzle and strikes the product. A lateral orifice (12) transmits a signal dependent on the gap between product and nozzle to control air flow to move the shaft. Shaft movement is detected by an electromechanical comparator (37, 38).
