An appts. for mass transfer, incorporating a screen support and a flattened rectangular tubular membrane with its ends joined to inlet and outlet connections, has folds at the corners of the membrane. These folds take up enough of the length and the width of the flattened tubular membrane to avoid the formation of dead spaces within the membrane and allow continuous flow through the membrane and the connections. They are triangular in shape and have a ratio of length to width between 1.5/1 and 5/1, the long sides extending along the edges of the membrane. The appts. is used partic. in artificial kidneys, for purifying blood. The invention prevents the formation of dead spaces which can occur in existing appts. It reduces to a min. the formation of wrinkles in joining up to the connections.
