A radiation source for spectral analysis has an envelope with anode and cathode suitably connected, with the envelope connected to a vacuum pump. It has a window throught which discharge radiation can pass. The material sample (14) is in contact with the cathode (9) which has a hole whose cross-section area at the cathode sample side is greater than on its other side, so that a discharge cavity with a hollow cathode effect is produced. This hole is stepped, or countersunk.
