Cylindrical housing containing sound and vibration insulant - using shrink fitted and spiral wound casings to produce internal pressure maintaining insulant in compression
A sound and vibration insulating material is placed under pressure inside an annular housing. The housing consists of an inner wall and an outer wall and hydraulic pressure is applied to the insulant until the elastic limit of the inner wall is passed. In this way, the hoop stresses in the outer wall maintain the insulant in compression, when the hydraulic pressure is removed. The hoop stresses in the outer wall may be achieved by using spiral winding with interlocking strip under tension, and shrink fitting if the insulating material is heat resistant.
