A geological sonde is moved continuously across the faces of the strata in a borehole. The sonde has an emitter and a receiver of acoustic compression waves spaced out on the long axis of the bore, as well as an emitter and a receiver of acoustic shear waves, similarly arranged some distance part. During the motion of the sonde, the transmission or propagation times of the compression and shear waves emitted and received, after having passed through part of the geological formations, by the equipment carried, are measured and compared. Enables a quantitative evaluation to be made of the number of fissures or crevasses present in a geological formation.
