The body (12) of the purging valve of a refrigerating system is brazed to a short length of pipe (14) which is, in turn brazed to the pipe (16). The core (48) of the valve is provided with a screw thread (46) which is screwed into the threaded bore of the sleeve (40). The sleeve (40) is inserted into the bore (19) of the body and forced downwards by the cap nut (52) which is screwed onto the thread (22). The pointed end (34) of the sleeve (40) pierces the wall of the pipe (16) and forms a seal around its conical surface (32). At the same time, an upper conical surface of the sleeve (40) forms a seal on a shoulder in the bore (19) of the body (12).
