An electrolysis appts., partic. for recovering mercury from solns., incorporates a container with an inlet and an outlet for the soln. An anode is near the outlet, a cathode near the inlet and outlets are provided for gas and mercury metal. Means for passing a direct current between the anode and the cathode is provided. The cathode is made from conducting fibres, pref. of lead, of length 0.01-4 times the length of the bed. The soln. is pref. one of sodium chloride. Its flow through the appts. may be single-pass and it may be recirculated until all the mercury is recovered. The appts., may also be two-pass. The construction of the cathode from metal fibres gives better conductivity than existing cathodes, made e.g. of granules. The tendency to form voids is less, giving better distribution.
