The connection is between the sloping inlets of a domestic refuse chute and the vertical main pipe, having an intermediate deflector component fitting between two sections of the main pipe and with one or more inlets. The sloping inlet is separated from the main pipe by a slide surface, pref. inclined at between 15 and 20 deg. to the vertical, so as to be steeper than the sloping inlet. This tends to increase the distance for which the incoming articles fall freely, guiding them towards the vertical centre line. Thus their harmful collision with the inside of the pipe wall and the resultant noise are avoided.
