Alternator and exciter set - has exciter mounted on and inside the rotor of the alternator

The shaft of this combined alternator and exciter set has the rotor and rectifiers of the exciter set mounted directly on to it. The exciter's stator is supported by an axial tubular flange (14) projecting inwards from the casing of the unit. The rotor of the alternator is mounted on another axial tubular flange (13) that rotates with the shaft and encloses the exciter. The alternator's stator is fixed to the inner circumference of the housing. The tubular flanges form a ventilation system and this arrangement avoids the inconvenience of the extra length when the two units are mounted in line along a common shaft.
