99Mo and 133Xe are made by irradiating a target contg. a fissile substance esp. 235V and dissolving it in a basic medium extracting 99Mo from the soln. obtd. and recovering 133Xe from the gas phase produced by the dissolution. The soln. is filtered and the filtrate acidified to remove the 99Mo by extraction chromatography. Process avoids the problems associated with the replace of hydrogen during dissoln. as occurred in prior art when 8M NaOH was used as basic medium followed by liquid-liquid extraction. The 99Mo and the 133Xe are prepd. from the same irradiated target. Since the soln. contains no contaminating V, the shielding can be less stringent than in prior art.
