The cable to be wound is held between two rollers, which are carried in a housing on a spindle which has a number of grooves. The grooves are annular over part of the circumference, and helical over the remainder. The pitch of the helical part of the groove is the same as that of the diameter of the cable being wound. The spindle is connected to the main drum by a belt drive. When the cable is being wound on the drum, then it is maintained at a constant distance from the flange of the drum, until a turn has been wound on. The mechanism then moves the centre of the cable through one cable diameter so that the cable is wound with annular turns connected by short helical lengths.
