Propulsive charge for mortar shell - is fired from mortar with shell and separates to fall aside after use, prevents ballistic instability

The propulsive charge is temporarily fitted to a mortar shell and fires this from the mortar. After being ejected with the shell, it separates and falls to one side. It is in three parts, a central propulsive charge in a hollow cylinder. This has booster charges around it and its lower end fits into a base for automatic or controlled firing. The upper end (6) has an adaptor (10), with vents (9, 12), for a small powder charge (8). Guide vanes (13) are fitted and clips (14) for holding the shell. When the main charge fires, the gases ignite the powder charge to ensure ejection and separation.
