The method comprises culturing bacteria belonging to Alcaligenes a culture medium contg. PVA as the carbon source. PVA in aq. soln. can be easily decomposed and the method can be adapted for disposing of waste water contg. PVA. A representative stock is Alcaligenes KP-12(FERM-P-3184); these bacteria can be collected widely from nature. When the stock is cultured successively in culture medium rich in nutrients, the utilisability for PVA of the stock is decreased. The addn. of yeast extract or corn steep liquor increases the multiplication velocity of the bacteria without giving harmful effect on the utilisability for PVA. The culture is practised at 20-37 degrees C and pH 6.0-8.0 under highly aerobic conditions and the decompsn. of PVA is completed in 2-7 days.
