Electrolyte for oxidn. of silver or silver coatings - using hot soln. of cupric chloride and alternating current electrolysis

Electrolyte for the oxidn. of silver and silver-coated prods., uses a.c. at 50 Hz. The electrolyte consists of a soln. contg. 5-15 (2-15) g/l of cupric chloride. Use of d.c. is avoided. Electrolyte is used for either (a) decorative purposes, e.g. household objects; or (b) electro-technical uses, e.g. in radio electronic or radar. An oxide coating is produced which is violet or dark red in coloure; mechanically strong; corrosion-resistant; and free from pores.
