The output shaft speed varies in a cyclic fashion, one cycle being completed in one turn of the shaft. During the turn, there is a zero speed point and fluctuating torques are not reflected back to the input drive. Input is via a worm gear driving two pinions on a shaft (3). A swinging arm having teeth along one edge is pivoted on the shaft (3) between the pinions and meshes with a pinion mounted on a layshaft (4). The layshaft is carried in bearings in two large gears which mesh with the pinions on the first shaft (3). One is freely carried on the output shaft (1) and the other is keyed on to another coaxial shaft (2). Finally, a further pinion keyed to the layshaft, drives through a middle sized gear keyed to the output shaft (1). A jockey wheel maintains the rack in mesh with the pinion.
