A gas contg. chlorine (derivs.) enters a lower burner comprising concentric tubular elements via an inlet assembly. Combustible gas enters via an inlet assembly which enters an external sleeve around the sample gas inlet. An adjusting block enables concentricity to be maintained. A window permits permanent checking of the primary flame. An indium covered copper element is located in the gas outlet from the burner which forms a duct to an upper burner with a window through which the luminescence is detected by a photomultiplier.
