Single piston engine with four compression chambers - has stepped piston operating in stepped cylinder with spark plugs fired to give one working stroke per revolution

The single piston engine has a large diameter crown which operates in the upper cylinder. The piston skirt which has a smaller diameter operates in the lower cylinder. The piston is hollow and slides over the cylinder which projects downwards from the cylinder head. Four compression chambers are thus formed, one above the piston crown, one under the piston skirt and one inside the piston. The firing of the ignition plugs is so arranged that the engine has one working stroke every revolution and is thus equivalent to a conventional four cylinder engine. The engine is also provided with hydraulically operated valves.
