Dowels are inserted and bonded with adhesive, particularly wooden dowels or pins into blind holes, for joining wooden parts for furniture. The dowels are pretreated with a set quantity of liq. adhesive e.g. vinyl cement in aqueous solution or dispersion etc. The set amount of adhesive is introduced first into small containers or geometrical capsules which are placed in the holes and are crushed over the bottom of the hole when the dowel is driven in and the liq. contents are spread out over the surfaces to be bonded. The capsules apply the required quantity of adhesive and enable it to be stored and handled easily without drying out or curing before use. The capsule (C) is small enough to fit easily into the hole (F). In mass production, the method can be mechanised by allowing the capsules to drop down a tube into position and by operating a ram to push each dowel forwards.
