A plant for recovering heat in the gases leaving a boiler incorporates using an intermediate heat transfer fluid. The plant includes a hot battery and a cold battery. A high boiling liq. flows through the hot battery and absorbs heat transferred from the boiler gases, which pass through it to the chimney. The heated liq. then flows through the cold battery, which is e.g. a tubular heat exchanger and can be at ground level. The heat is transferred to water returning to the boiler. No corrosion takes place in the hot battery, the tubular exchanger or the chimney and no vaporisation of the heat transfer fluids occurs.
