Two speed drive for supercharger of diesel engine - uses starter motor to drive supercharger on starting engine

The super-charger of a diesel engine is normally driven by a V belt which drives a pulley mounted on a bearing in the supercharger housing. The pulley is provided with internal teeth which engage matching teeth on a sleeve. To start the Diesel engine, the pinion, of the starter motor is pushed forwards to engage the teeth of the flywheel at the same time the teeth of the sleeve are pushed out of engagement with the teeth of the pulley and a tongue engages a slot. The supercharger is then driven by a starter motor at a much higher speed so that engine starting is made easier.
