The discharge tube (3) electronic starts protection system is interchangeable with classic glow starters. The starters (12) having amongst other components a semiconductor triggered switch element (21). This element (21) is designed to temporary connect the preheating electrodes (1, 2) of the discharge tube. The starter also has a relaxation control circuit for the switch element. A circuit consisting of a capacitor (27) shunted by a resistance (32) is inserted in at least a branch of the relaxation circuit. A voltage step element (24) is connected between one of the terminals of the capacitor (24) and one of the electrodes of the triggered switch element (21). The voltage step element being a Zener diode (44).
