Drum-type washing machine is used at three motor speeds, low (for washing), intermediate (for rinsing and for drying delicate fabrics) and high (for final drying of robust fabrics). The three speeds are provided by two electric motors mounted on a common drive shaft. One of the motors has both a multiple-pole winding (for washing) and a two-pole winding (for rinsing and low-speed spinning), while the second motor is a high speed commutator motor used only once in each washing cycle, for final high-speed spinning.
