As shown, glass pieces are introduced at 8 and liquid radioactive waste at 14 into heated rotating stainless steel drum 3 which is slightly inclined to the horizontal. The temperature at the inlet may be 120‹ C. and at the outlet 400‹ C. The mixture leaves at 25 and passes to a melting furnace to form a vitreous mass incorporating the radioactive material and suitable for storage.
