1470320 Producing selective excitation by electromagnetic radiation JERSEY NUCLEARAVCO ISOTOPES Inc 7 June 1974 [8 June 1973] 25350/74 Heading G6P [Also in Division H1] In separating isotopes, excitation of one isotope, e.g. U-235, is achieved without excitation of another isotope, e.g. U-238, by employing laser radiation to raise such particles of the one isotope as occupy the ground state 12, and such particles of the one isotope as occupy aboveground state levels 24, 26 to the higher energy level 18 (or a further level 18SP1/SP if the transitions 16, 28, 30 are forbidden). Tuned laser radiation can be used; subsequently, the particles are raised from the higher energy level 18 (or 18SP1/SP) to above the ionization threshold 14 for separation and collection by use of crossed fields.
