1471723 Laboratory bench J-L CARCEL 29 Aug 1974 [31 Aug 1973] 37706/74 Heading B1X [Also in Division B5] A method of moulding a slab-like modular element of polygonal periphery having an acid-proof working surface and a continuous flange in one piece with the slab along at least one side of the polygon and projecting beyond the working surface so that when the working surface is faced upwards the flange extends above the working surface to prevent flow of liquid past the flange from the working surface, the element being used as a top or as part of a top of a bench for a chemical laboratory, which method comprises providing a horizontal mould 9 having a point 10 with a continuous groove 11 in its base, extending along at least one side of the polygon, introducing a paste into the mould wherein paste in the groove will ultimately form the flange and allowing the paste to harden, the paste being polyester resin mixed with a filler consisting of silica powder or volvic lava powder, the filler constituting 60-90% by weight of the final product. The filler may be constituted of powder of specified particle size range and the polyester resin may include 0.1-0.5% dimethylaniline and 1-2% benzyl peroxide, both by weight. Various combinations of modular elements may be used to form chemical benches of specified shapes.
