1472274 Surface wave devices THOMSONCSF 17 April 1974 [20 April 1973] 16874/74 Heading H3V [Also in Division G2] The fingers of a surface wave interdigital transducer on a piezoelectric substrate 1 are shaped so as to define radiating gaps. This enables the acoustic output of each finger pair to subtend a wider angle than is obtained with straight fingers, (Fig. 5, not shown), and the direction of maximum acoustic radiation of the transducer to vary with the frequency of the voltage applied thereto. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, the fingers 4, 5 of each pair have a respective common centre at equally spaced points A-G along one of the edge conductors 3 of the transducer. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the finger separation is varied along the transducer, and in a further modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the edge conductors 2, 3 are also curved so as to permit the acoustic radiation from the transducer to converge. In an acousto-optical deflector system, Fig. 7, surface waves P from a transducer 13 deflect an electromagnetic beam 16 in a film 14 of light barium crown glass deposited on surface 7 of substrate 1. Beam 16 emanates from a heliumneon laser 18 and is introduced into film 14 via an optical coupling grating 15. By altering the frequency of the surface waves, the angle of deflection of the optical beam and/or the frequency of the deflected beam 20 may be altered. The amplitude of the deflected beam may be modulated by varying the voltage applied by generator 12 to transducer 13. In a frequency-selective transmission system, Fig. 8, additional transducers 22, 23, 24 are provided on substrate 1, positioned to receive surface waves emitted at different angles, and hence at different frequencies, from transducer 13. The outputs of transducers 22, 23, 24 may be added to give an output 26 which, if their respective separations from transducers 13 are different, has a dispersive delay characteristic. The outputs of transducers 22, 23, 24 may be connected to instruments which determine the spectral content of waves applied thereto. The finger separation of transducer 13 may be varied (Fig. 9, not shown). In an alternative arrangement transducers 22, 23, 24 may be provided at the concave side of the fingers of transducer 13.
