1478516 Benzazaxanthene lactones BASF AG 31 July 1974 [1 Aug 1973] 33739/74 Addition to 1454304 Heading C4P The invention comprises benzazaxanthene lactones of the general formula wherein RSP1/SP is H, alkyl, cyanoalkyl or hydroxyalkyl having 1 to 6 C atoms per alkyl radical, alkoxyalkyl having 2 to 12 C atoms, carboalkoxyalkyl having 4 to 11 C atoms, or phenylalkyl having 7-12 C atoms, RSP2/SP is phenyl optionally substituted by C 1 -C 3 alkyl, Cl and/or Br, RSP3/SP is H or an optionally substituted aliphatic or aromatic radical, X and Y are independently hydroxyl, Cl, Br or C 1 -C 3 alkyl, ZSP1/SP is H, Cl, Br, NO 2 , alkyl or hydroxy- or halo-alkyl having 1-3 C atoms, ZSP2/SP is H, Cl, Br, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or phenyl, m and n are independently 0, 1, 2 or 3 individual radicals X and/or Y being identical or different when m and/or n denote 2 or 3. They are prepared by condensing a benzoylbenzoic acid of the general formula wherein R is H, C 1-4 alkyl or a C-acyl radical of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having 1 to 4 C atoms and in which RSP1/SP, RSP2/SP, X, Y, ZSP1/SP, m and n are as above with a homophthalimide of the general formula wherein RSP3/SP and ZSP2/SP are as above. The condensation takes place in presence of water-eliminating agents, e.g. sulphuric or polyphosphoric acid, acetic anhydride or zinc chloride, optionally in presence of a high boiling point solvent, e.g. trichlorobenzene. The compounds are used in pressure sensitive recording media.
