1478945 Position encoders BENDIX CORP 18 Feb 1975 [1 March 1974] 6853/75 Heading H3H The height of an aircraft coming in to land is digitally encoded by a translucent-opaque code disc 60 cooperating with light-emitting diodes 72 and phototransistors 76 to generate a binary coded altitude signal, individual bits of which are amplified in respective transistors 78 and fed to a store in a transponder (not shown) which can be called from the ground when the ground controller desires altitude information. Resistors 80 bleed any residual current from transistors 76 when they are off. The power supply 82 is switched off to interrupt altitude encoding automatically when the transponder is called for non-altitude information, e.g. aircraft identity.
