The ring-shaped contact zone is defined by a seal comprising two webs 13, 14 respectively located radially outwardly and inwardly of the shell. The webs have evacuable pockets 24. The embodiment shown has a seal plate 9 which includes a bulkhead door and is tacked on to the submerged surface by electromagnets 36 whilst the pockets are evacuated. Lifting hooks 42 can be welded to the side of a submerged ship for attachment of lifting frames 59.
