The mould belt (20) is not only cooled using a cooling fluid but, at the same time, also held and guided in a stable manner at a small distance from a guide plate (13) by hydrostatic forces produced by this fluid. For this purpose, the cooling fluid is guided into a multiplicity of small pockets (56) in the surface of the guide plate (13), in which pockets hydrostatic forces dependent on the distance between the mould belt (20) and the rim of the pocket (56) are established. Outlet openings (58, 21) in the guide plate (13) give rise to a negative pressure on the mould belt (20) outside the pockets (56). The belt can, in addition, be pulled against the guide plate (13) by magnetic forces.
