TREATING SYSTEM OF MATERIAL* FURNACE UTILIZING SAID SYSTEM AND METHOD OF TREATING MATERIAL BY SAID SYSTEM

A system for handling materials comprises (a) a roughly horizontal floor, which is pref. circular, (b) a number of vanes or scoops laid out radially at equal spacing, above the floor, but close to it, (c) a mechanism for setting up a relative motion between the floor and the vanes which is pref. rotatory, and in which for pref. the floor moves and the vanes are stationary, (d) a feeder for the delivery of the material, from above, down to the floor, (e) a special angle of alignment of the back edges of the majority of the vanes positioned above the floor, relatively to the line of displacement of the materials; the vanes or scoops being arranged so that their planes subtend to a line at right angles to a radius of the floor, an angle in the range from ca. +2 degrees or -2 degree to ca. +13 degrees to -13 degree. Used esp. for calcining of materials contg. carbon, in a furnace, such as the treatment of petroleum coke for the prodn. of carbon for electrodes. The system can be applied to calcining furnaces in which the material is fed in at he centre and drawn off at the perimeter, fed in at the perimeter and drawn off at the centre, or fed in between the two and drawn off both at the centre and the perimeter. The piling up of material round the vanes is prevented, and the flow of the materials is uniform.
