Alkylating hydrocarbons, esp. isoparaffins with olefins - using acid and sulphonamide catalyst, giving high yields of gasoline components

A hydrocarbon is alkylated by means of an olefin, in the liquid phase, in presence of a strongly acid liquid catalyst and 0.0005-0.5 (0.001-0.2) wt. %, based on the catalyst, of a catalytic auxiliary of formula (I): (where R' is an alkyl, aryl or alkaryl radical, pref. 1-7C, esp. CH, phenyl (pref.) or tolyl; and R2 is 8-30C (10-18C) alkyl, esp. octadecyl). Formation of 1:1 addn. prods. of isoparaffins and olefins, and of highly branched alkylation prods., is favoured, and prodn. of olefin polymers and cracking prods. is reduced, resulting in smaller consumption of acid catalyst.
