A mine conveyor with carriages travelling along a beam mounted under the roof of the mine gallery includes a braking device with a pneumatic or hydraulic actuator. This operates so that two arms are swung inwards about a hinge point at the bottom of each to that a shoe is forced inwards each side onto the web of the I-beam between them. These are forced apart against spring force by a piston between them. This is in turn operated by a servo piston at each end of a channel at right angles to the travel of the piston. These arms are positioned between longitudinal bars parallel to this channel, the end covers being mounted on these arms.
