[Also in Divisions A5 and C5] The invention comprises a mixture of hemiformals and polyhemiformals which is formed by the reaction of one to two molar equivalents of formaldehyde with benzyl alcohol, optionally substituted in the ring by halogen, alkyl or haloalkyl radicals. The reaction is generally carried out by reacting paraformaldehyde with the alcohol in an alkaline medium, e.g. in the presence of sodium or potassium carbonate or magnesium oxide, until a clear solution is formed. The reaction products of formaldehyde and benzyl alcohol, 2-methylbenzyl alcohol and 3,4 - dichlorobenzyl alcohol are disclosed.
