The mast for a sailing vessel consists of two vertical halves (1, 2) connected to one another (4, 5) and symmetrically arranged on either side of the vertical plane of symmetry (3). The profile of the halves is such that their facing surfaces (6, 7) form a venturi-shaped gap (8) in the direction of the sail (9). A vertically extending valve member (10) is arranged in the gap and is rotatable about a shaft in the plane (3). One vertical edge of the member projects outside the mast at the side of the sail which is secured to this edge. The other edge is within the gap and can swivel into contact with one or the other surface (6 or 7) whereby the valve forms a venturi with the opposite surface (7 or 6) pointing towards the leeward side of the sail.
