In vitro cell culture on metallic plate - with surface irregularities to increase growth area

A tank filled with a growth medium contains metallic growth surfaces on which cells grow. The metallic surface has surface irregularities which are greater than the diameter of the cells and are produced by sintering or sputtering the metal which is pref. titanium, stainless steel or aliminium. The appts. is used to grow primary cells e.g. chick embryo fibroblasts, green monkey kidney, bovine kidney, or dog kidney cells, diploid cells such as WI-38 and stable live cells e.g. VERO, BSC, or Hela cells. These primary cultures will support the generation of virus vaccines e.g. measles, mumps, rubella, parainfluenza and Marek's vaccines. The extended surface area increases the cell prodn. from a given cell culture container. The surface irregularity improves the adhesion of the cell sheet to the growth surfaces.
