The mechanism is intended for making and applying metal foil covers on filled containers (6) held in the lift frame of a closure mechanism (1), the container having an outward flange (6') at the top. It comprises a foil supply and cutting station (9) moving synchronously with the lift and having rollers (34) to transport a parted foil strip (36) from a supply roller 35) and, in the closure mechanism (1) a separate support (15) for foil blanks. Between the rollers (34, 35) there is a synchronous notcher (37) with a number of cutter pairs (38), and the edge of the foil strip is folded in a folding station (42). Between the rollers (34) and the closure mechanism (1) there is a cutter (50) which cyclically cuts off the blanks moved on to the support (15).
