Pb and Ag are recovered from PbSO4 - contg. residues by contacting at 20-120 degrees C with Group II B or VIII metal in one or more steps, so as to obtain a metallic product contg. elutriation, sieving or other physical separation process. The metal is opt. Fe or Zn, a residue comprising these metals, or e.g. one contg. Zn,ZnCl2 and ZnO. The process is opt. performed in an aq. suspension. Or the process may be performed with dry powder in a mill. The soln. leaving the recovery process is opt. extracted to remove Cl- and F- ions, and the resultant ZnSO4 introduced into the attack and purification circuit before Zn electrolysis. The solid product from the recovery process is opt. compressed into an anode and submitted to a known Pb electrorefining or it is compressed and melted for purificn. of Pb by known pyrometallurgical processes.
