Preservative and disinfectant compsns. contain, as active antimicrobial ingredient, =1 animal, i.e. a sec. amine-and HCHO condensate of formula R1R2N-CH2-NR3R4 (I) (in which (i), R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each (unsatd.) linear, branched or cyclic 1-12C alkyl- or aryl gps., opt. contg. Gp. VB or VIB heteroatoms, partic. O, S and N, in chain; or (ii) R1 and R2 as well as R3 and R4 together with the N atoms, can form 2-8C cyclic or polycyclic, aromatic or non-aromatic gps., the ring of which may contain Gp.VB or VIB heteroatoms, esp. O, S or N, and which may be substd. by gps. contg. Gp. VB or VIB heteroatoms, eps. O, S and N, and by =1 R1, R2, R3 and r4 gps.; or (iii) R1 and R3 as well as R2 and R4 together each represent -C2H4-gps.) and/or their salts with inorganic and/or organic acids. (I) inhibit germ growth in cosmetics and technical compsns., e.g. drilling oil emulsions and cold lubricants. (I) are more active than HCHO adducts which release HCHO e.g. hexahydrotriazines; do not release HCHO; do not smell, do not irritate the mucous membrane, and are active at concns. =0.1%. (I) have bacteriostatic and fungistatic activity at pH 3-12 and bactericidal, fungicidal and algicidal activity at concns.
