1464629 Coating glass articles ANCHOR HOCKING CORP 4 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 29778/74 Heading B2E A colour decorated glass article, particularly a bottle, is made by applying an impermanently bonded coating of a "glass decorating colour" (i.e. an organic ink, an inorganic colouring agent such as a vitreous grit, or a decal) to a surface region of the article, applying a finely divided heat-settable plastics material or a heat-settable plastisol over and beyond the colour-coated region and heating to produce a continuous plastics film which covers and protects the decorating colour. A plurality of "colours" may be applied so long as that applied finally is impermanentlv bonded and in particular a ceramic "colour" may be applied over a number of thermoplastic "colours". The decoration, which may include a name, trademark or design, may be applied by screen or offset printing or by decal application, particularly of a decal comprising a wax-covered glass frit adhered by wax to a page backing. The plastics material may comprise an ionomeric ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer applied as a powder by an electrostatic fluidised bed or spray process, or a PVC plastisol applied by dipping.
