The composite cap is formed in a single piece to fit onto the neck of a container and consists of a body having a top and bottom which are connected by side walls. The top has a bridle piece on its external periphery so that it can be gripped and the bottom is covered by an airtight, flexible, elastomeric sheath. The body also has an annular rib around its periphery and the sheath has notched distributed around its periphery. The cap can be economically and easily fabricated and it is designed to be opened by punctuating with a needle, the construction reducing the force required to pierce the cap.
