Dense, polycrystalline ceramics contg. MgO, Fe2O3 Al2O3 or a ferrite MFe2O4 where M is Ni, Zn or Co is made by precipitating Mg++, Fe+++, Al+++ or a 1-2 molar mixt. of a divalent metal ion (MII) and Fe+++ with a hydroxide ionin aq. soln. The gelatinous ppte is sepd., dried and sintered at a temp. of =1000 degrees C but below the decomposition temp. long enough for almost ultimate density to be attained. The process is simpler and less costly than conventional processes which require many steps such as mixing, grinding, sieving and often not pressing.
