The vehicle seat belt retractor blocking mechanism has an inertia mass sensor giving increased sensitivity. The retractor mechanism has U-shaped frame in which the take up spool for the belt is seated. The axle of the spool extends beyond the frame and carries a ratchet wheel (9). The frame has a stirrup-shaped support (21) fitted to the outside surface surrounding the lower part of the ratchet wheel and carrying a spindle with a pendulum arm (12). The lower part of the pendulum arm is angled and has a nest-like indentation in which the lower pendulum weight (25) is loosely seated. The upper part of the pendulum arm has a second weight (19) fixed with its centre of gravity above the centre line of the spindle. The lower weight (25) has a collar (23), which, when shifted from its vertical position, brings a tip (32) into engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel (9).
