Method for treating waste water (esp. industrial) contg. organic components to recover a slurry useful as fertilizer comprises flocculating or precipitating dissolved or suspended impurities. First the water is treated with =0.25 l. H3PO4 (opt. also HNO) per 1000 l. sufficient to give a distinctly or strongly acid reaction, and with an organic acid (II) or an equivalent amt. of a prod. or deriv. of (II). After mixing, the water is neutralised with milk of lime or quickline, then the precipitate removed from the liq. phase. (II) are formic, acetic, oxalic or lactic acids. Only one pptn. stage is necessary; process is quick and no biological clarification of the treated water is necessary. Disinfection, sterilisation and removal of worms and their eggs are achieved. The recovered slurry typically contains 21% phosphate and 14% N.
