The external foam insulation (16) is for large upright vessels, particularly cylindrical tanks containing liquid. It consists of a large number of seamless rings (44A, B) formed in situ in succession individually along the vessel axis and against its outer surface, and of foam material. Forming can be effected by means of annular shuttering (30), guided on the outside surface by distance pieces of insulating material coaxially to the vessel, and indexed upwards for the height of a foam ring as each one hardens. These distance pieces can be evenly spaced round the vessel and glued to it, and they can be in the form of pre-fabricated strips of foam material, with a profiled metal rail embedded in the outside surface of each.
