Condensation of nitro-furfural with acetone - in presence of metallic halide catalysts to give coccidiostatic agent

Condensation of 5-nitrofurfuraldehyde with acetone at 50-100 degrees C in presence of metallic halide catalyst and elimination of water release in reaction gives a solid crystalline coccidiostatic agent. 5-Nitrofurfuraldehyde is unstable in presence of the usual alkaline catalysts for condensations between alpha-ketones and aldehydes. Typically a 65% yield of 1,5-bis(5-nitrofuryl)penta-2,5-dien-3-one was prepd. by reaction of 5-nitrofurfuraldehyde with acetone in hexane in presence of ferrous chloride at reflux temp.
