ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-bis-(bromoethyl)-tetrachlorobenzenesof the following formula:wherein the six substituents X represent together at all timesfour chlorine atoms and two CH2Br radicals, are prepared byreacting 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4-bis-(chloromethyl)-tetrachlorobenzenewith a bromide of an element of group 1 to group 3 inclusive ofthe periodic system, in a solvent and at a temperature of from20 and 180°C. Use is made of solvents which dissolve thebis-(chloromethyl)-tetrachlorobenzene, but in which the resultingbis-(bromomethyl)-tetrachlorobenzene is substantially insoluble,such solvents being alcohols, ethers and ketones. These bis-(bromomethyl)-tetrachlorobenzenes have been found to possess verygood fireproofing properties and are advatageously employed withpolycondensation and polyaddition products, and polymerizationproducts of unsaturated aliphatic monomers or co-polymess of atleast one aliphatic monomer, to form fireproof polymericcompositions.
