1512584 1,4 - Dithiin - diisothiazole compounds E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 22 Oct 1976 [23 Oct 1975 7 Sept 1976] 43952/76 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Novel 1,4-dithiin-diisothiazole compounds of the formula wherein both R groups are the same and represent H, CN, COCl, COORSP1/SP, CONRSP2/SPRSP3/SP or COO-(alkyl) 4 NSP(+)/SP; RSP1/SP is H, (C 1 -C 5 )alkyl, phenyl, potassium or benzyl; RSP2/SP and RSP3/SP are independently H, (C 1 -C 5 )alkyl, phenyl or phenyl substituted by alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, halo or di(C 1 -C 5 )alkylamino, are prepared by reacting tetracyano-1,4-dithiin or 4,5-dicyano-1,3- dithiolen-2-one with sulphur in 1,2-dimethoxyethane at a temperature of from 50‹ to 280‹ C. in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. an alkali metal iodide or a tertiary aliphatic amine, and optionally converting the resulting compound wherein R is -CN to a compound where R is -H, -COCl, -CO 2 RSP1/SP, -CONRSP2/SPRSP3/SP or -CO 2 (alkyl) 4 NSP+/SP. The novel compounds may be used for the preparation of fluorescent polymers. The dicarboxylic acid derivative is useful as a dye or pH indicator.
