Sulfur-containing bisphenols, process for their preparation and pharmaceutical compositions containing same

Alkylidenedithiobisphenols of the formula wherein R 1 is an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms and R 2 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms. These compounds are prepared by reacting a mercaptophenol of the general formula wherein R 1 has the same significance as above, with a carbonyl compound of the formula R 2 CH 3 CO in the presence of an acid catalyst. The acid catalyst is preferably hydrochloric acid, perchloric acid or a strong acid cationic exchange resin. Following compounds are prepared in the examples: 2,2-bis-(3,5-di-t.-butyl- 4 - hydroxyphenylmercapto) - propane; 2,2 - bis - (3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenylmercapto) - butane; 2,2 - bis - (3 - t. - butyl - 5 - methyl - 4 - hydroxyphenylmercapto) - propane; 2,2 - bis - (3 - isopropyl - 5 - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenylmercapto) - propane; 1,1 - bis - (3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenylmercapto) ethane; and 2,2 - bis - (3,5 - di - t. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenylmercapto) -pentane. These compounds are found useful for reducing the cholesterol level in the blood. They can be administered directly in a suitable dosage, mixed in a feed composition or with suitable non-toxic carriers. The preferred dosage is 15-600 mg. of active compound per kilogram of body weight of the recipient.
